Re: Testing my Evinrude Fastwin at high speed

:woo: :chuffed: she lives :chuffed: :woo: Replaced the guilty spark plug today and sure enough she's up and running again! Thanks all for your help and info  I've been playing with the high/low speed needles and got it running well at both high and low speed, it's a bit lumpy and choughy a...

Re: Testing my Evinrude Fastwin at high speed

Yeah that does look quite different to mine, they must have changed the design soon after because mine is a 1961.

Of course it will be a low speed test :hmmm: the slipway owners are very friendly though so I will probably tie up there.

Tomorrow is another day however so we'll see how it goes!

Re: Insurance

I've used tower gate for insurance this year as they were the only company I could find who didn't ask for a specific make and model of boat, being a self build mine doesn't have one!

They seemed pretty reasonable though and offered several different package options.

Re: Testing my Evinrude Fastwin at high speed

Done a bit more today and set up the synchronisation as to the manuals (thanks rapier!) I also checked the timing again to make sure that it is firing exactly on TDC. I also found a problem with a faulty spark plug! I tested them by turning the engine over with them out which I hadn't bothered to do...

Re: Testing my Evinrude Fastwin at high speed

Thanks for that, I'm pretty sure all the wiring is ok and not shorting on anything, I certainly didn't notice any bare copper when I had the flywheel off. Rapier is the throttle cam setup what you mean by the synchronisation? I set this yesterday so that it starts touching the roller exactly on the ...

Re: Testing my Evinrude Fastwin at high speed

Yeah I thought the old design seemed ok to be honest as the little spring is a bit fiddly. Heres the latest from another days playing anyway ... The carb stripdown etc seemed to have little effect and still wouldn't give me the higher speeds when tested on the water (not even intermittently) so I pr...

Re: Testing my Evinrude Fastwin at high speed

I've had another look over things and found a couple of possible causes ... On stripping down the carb I found the little spring that should be on the float drifting around in the bowl which couldn't be helping however the rest of it was perfectly clean. I also found a small leak on the primer bulb ...

Re: Testing my Evinrude Fastwin at high speed

Yeah I noticed they were having a bit of trouble with the evinrude 40, I'm glad it's not just me! The ignition system was all replaced at the same time as the carb rebuild - coils, points, condensers and plugs so I would have ruled that out but I'm not so sure now. I think I will give the whole thin...

Re: Testing my Evinrude Fastwin at high speed

Thanks for the reply guys, I was beginning to wander if I would hear anything. A test prop sounds like it could be a good idea and if I could borrow one that would be brilliant because I'm pulling my hair out with this engine the latest is.... I went out the other day, tied up by my local slipway an...

Testing my Evinrude Fastwin at high speed

I'm having trouble getting my fastwin to run at higher speeds (coughs and wont rev properly) and I'm pretty sure it's due to the carb not being set up right. I found a tutorial on the net that says I need to run the engine in gear at full throttle whilst winding the high speed needle in in small inc...
