In an attempt to make life a little easier I bought some "calibrated" measuring cups.
After suffering some variability of results I checked the measuring cups and found that the ratio measurements are way off. For example using the 2:1 and starting with about 320 ml, the extra "1" added only about 100 ml rather than the expected 160 ml. Quite an error and which I think goes some way to explaining the variability as sometimes I used the basic ml measurements.
The normal ml measurements seem about right, it's just the very helpful ratio markings which are wrong.
Hope this helps somebody.

Re: Paint mixes using graduated measuring cups.
A friend of mine bought special pot marked up for oil / fuel mix ratios, we checked it and found it was way off. In this instance it wouldn't have mattered as his motor was a seagull so you can use pretty much anything unless the bottle has a picture of a chip pan, but had it been an Evinrude.....
