Post the serial number up and I may be able to tell you the year, also , is it a four cylinder 115 or a six cylinder 115, the straight six is the better engine.

So guys, how can I find out more about the engine and more importantly manuals ?

Anyone you would recommend to give it a once over ?

I have always wanted the challenge of re-building one of these engines from scratch - I just would like to do some reading beforehand

Ebay is probaly the best bet for a manual, I'm not sure if they were still paper by 1984, I bought one on CD off Ebay for coppers, only had a quick look at it so far but will be using it to check the Stapely 115's (it's 1984 like the one you are talking about but I re-badged it as a 1972 'cos I don't like the later decals) timing & syncro out before Falmouth.
Mercs are like women, no 2 are exactly alike. That's what testing is about. In general it is safer to test motors and props than women!
