Simmonds Ski Boat in Action - on Saturday afternoon TV

Ok - don't get TOO excited, but for those of you who survived "The Young Ones" (1961 with Cliff Richard and Robert Morley) yesterday afternoon, you'll have spotted not only a couple of T-Type MGs, but quite a long sequence of a Simmonds Ski Boat in action, including a short clip, shot from onboard t...

Re: Alby Continental steering gear questions.

Re: 2 - Rudder: If this is anything like the Simmonds setup... The bottom rudder bearing should be fixed to the hull. a) to stop it flopping about and b) more importantly, to stop the water coming in. The rubber tube should be clamped to the bottom and top bearings and it's sole purpose (other than ...

Re: Winter Mag

I would like to see a pdf copy made available to new members, but everyone is a volunteer and we have limited funds , perhaps someone will get around to doing it. Have you tried the members section yet ? Ask four your pass code If the club is using Adobe InDesign for the magazine layup, then a PDF ...

Re: Fuel Additives

Ethanol has a wonderful habit of soaking up water from the condensation in the tanks (including filing station storage tanks). As to whether V-Power has ethanol in it or not, who knows. I generally don't trust oil companies to "speak my weight" these days. Having been caught out with low-sulphur die...

Re: Fuel Additives

I've tended to use Lead Replacement additive from Halfords since the withdrawal of LRP petrol at the local Sainburys. I've tended to buy Premium Unleaded instead. But I did get caught with a load of "god-knows-what" at Windermere last year. I suspect the Ethanol content (whatever that is - it appear...

Re: Prop choice

I think the answer is: "Possibly". The shaft revs and gap between the shaft and hull will determine the max diameter of the prop. The weight of the boat; engine power and shaft revs will determine the pitch of the prop. As Alacrity says, there aren't a lot of small 1:1 gearboxes. The diesel's revs a...

Re: Can any engine be marinised?

At the risk of putting a lot of cats amongst quite a few pigeons.... The simplest marinization method - often preferred by our American Cousins on larger boats- is a dry exhaust stack plus a keel cooler or two in place of the radiator. works well on a Trawler with a funnel. The Albatross was origina...

Re: Coil over heating

Kauri, Make sure the coil is mounted upright (preferably, not on the engine itself). If it's on its side, it will get hot on the upper side as the cooling oil is at the bottom. With it upright, the bit where there is no oil is at the top and not near the coil winding itself - weird, but worked for u...

Re: Royal flotilla!!!!!!I didn't learn much over 3 hours of TV!!

The Fairey Owners Club had two boats: a Huntress "Dawn Huntress" from Newcastle and a Huntsman 28 "Midnight Blue" from the Hamble who ran together. There was a 2.6 second shot of them passing the Queen - blink and you will have missed it. As I assisted (albeit at some distance) to get the Huntress r...
