1971 Sea Ray SRV190 Project For Sale (Updated)

Heavy fibreglass construction, 18+ feet long, 155HP OMC HUFR-19EX Stringer Drive (Buick/Kaiser Jeep family 'odd fire' V6), accommodates 6 people normally or 4 when the front seats are configured as sun loungers.

I bought the Sea Ray as a non-runner several years ago to prevent it getting broken up, the intention was to restore it for use at the Lake District but unfortunately as with many of my projects, the progress has been slow and intermittent.

Last summer, I put in concerted effort on the electrical and fuel systems to get it running on the key. Now it’s time to pass her on to someone who’ll finish the job off and return it to the water, a very worthwhile project.

The decent stuff;

The engine starts and runs nicely, forward and reverse clutches engage properly. The carburettor has been ultrasonically cleaned and rebuilt with new gaskets, a new fuel pump has been fitted, the distributor has been rebuilt with new points and condenser, the alternator has had new brushes installed, the engine oil and filter have been changed. The engine has since been run for approximately an hour, the initial start was accompanied by terrible clatter from the valve gear due to the hydraulic lifters collapsing over time, silent operation quickly resumed as the fresh oil circulated;

The seats and cockpit trim appear original and in good order, some minor upholstery seam repairs are required and there are a few cigarette burns and scuffs on the cockpit lower side trims. The carpets and are tidy but probably not original.

It sits on a decent galvanised four-wheel braked trailer which I’m told has never been in water. During the time in my custody, it’s been raised off the ground on blocks with the tyres part deflated and covered to protect from the sun.

It comes with three covers, a decent battery, two propellers, a new transom seal, a new cooling water lift pump and oil seal/gasket kit for the leg, factory operation and service manuals.

European Sea Ray's were assembled in Belgium, the 1971 SRV190 mouldings appear to have a mix of 1970 and 1971 US model year features, maybe this was down to whatever spare or duplicate moulds were available from the main Michigan and Arizona plants, but who knows.

Engines and drives were assembled by OMC in Belgium but appear to be identical to US offerings. Engine parts are readily available from American car parts outlets as the 225 was made for many years, first by GM in 1963, then AMC from 1966 to 1971 and GM again from 1974 on. Most OMC drive parts are readily available from vintage boat specialists in the US via numerous internet sites. The prop chart says it should be good for 45mph in the right trim so it’s no slouch.

The stuff that needs a little attention;

The drive leg needs servicing. A cooling water lift pump kit, gasket/oil seal kit and a new transom bellows are included to get you started.

The hull and deck need a good machine polish to restore the colour plus a few gel-coat repairs, mainly mooring related scrapes and probably not bad enough to need a colour match, clear would look fine. I had a hull polishing session late 2021 and the gelcoat cleans up very nicely (if you like Avocado) but I've only managed the transom and starb’d side so far and they will need doing again.

The original sun shade fabric is missing though the frame is complete, photos showing what the original should look like can be found online.

It’s not had the benefit of being fully under cover during my ownership but a quality ‘Classic Accessories’ cover has kept the weather out, this is now past it’s best and won’t last much longer, I would recommend buying another to protect the investment.

OK, you won’t be able to use her next weekend or the one after, but I’m sure she could easily be sorted in time for the summer, £4500 firm, located near A1/A66 Scotch Corner junction.

If you are interested, please send me a PM and I'll get back to you as soon as possible, unfortunately my day job is a little restricted for coms so please bare with me, Thanks, Bob.

Please remember she’s FIFTY years old and will take a bit of hard work to return her to prime condition, unique in the UK I would have thought!
