Tohatsu Power Trim/tilt

Post by welshhealey »

Hi
Does anyone on here know someone who specializes in power trim /tilt rams ? mine is leaking oil, it has been to hydraulic repair place cost me a lot of £'s to have o rings replaced and various seals etc...ram was slightly pitted on surface and has been sorted but still leaking under load ! badly! been back to the firm twice, ... also, contacted Tohatsu UK but no luck.. they said "these units are virtually bombproof and never known to give trouble ! :hmmm: I'm at my last tether now :grrr: all this warm weather and no boat to play with :( are replacement parts available for this pwr/t/t on this fairly modern Engine ? ?

The only thing I can offer is that these may be the same unit as the Mercury of same size. These days, most outboards are bits of everyone,Merc Tohatsu,Yamaha,Nissan.Honda,I think, do their own thing :hmmm:
no matter how bad it is,it can always get worse,I'm an optimist

A nil response is better than a false reply. luckily on here we don't seem to have folk that supplement their lack of knowledge with creative fiction. I would think that as you have been to a hydraulics specialist and they have not found it something very unusual is causing the leak. At a stab I would suggest that there may be a crack in the cylinder that only opens up under pressure which in hydraulic systems is very high. I'm guessing that you cannot pinpoint the actual location of the leak because the trim parts are hidden by the saddle and swivel when assembled.

Cheers Floater and Haventaclue, I will bear these constructive points in mind ;) however, if the casing is cracked I will be gutted as I priced a new unit today and they are in the region of £1400! that cant be right surely :hmmm: anyway, since my first post, I have since found out that they are made by a company called "Showa" and ironically there is one of their factories near me but only make power steering pumps and shock absorbers there for BMW Audi etc,... the Marine side of their products are in Japan ! :o .... the joys of boating
