And although the engine isn't much good I'm thinking it's worth the money for the gearbox, water pump etc. But I'm wandering if that will be compatible with a 1600 cross flow as that's the engine I want really (I think).

I know very little about these engines but they seem to be quite common and parts easily available for them so perhaps the right way to go (slight change of plan on my latest build by the way) but are parts interchangeable between sizes of engine?

1300 and 1600 cross flow engines, coded by Ford as Kent engines have lots in common with each other, 1100, 1300 and 1600 all have the same size bore, bolt P.C.D. on the bell housings are all the same, the marine exhaust manifold off this engine will fit a 1600, or for that matter a 1100, if you are going to build a marinised 1600, all the marinisation parts from this motor should fit.

1300 + 1600 (kent engine, Alan Worters) are same except for stroke, 1600 block is roughly 7/16" taller. A 1600 bored to + 90 will give almost 1700cc. if using a later 711m block use 1300 pistons to increase compression.
Dont confuse with Later Valencia designated models (reverted back to 3 main bearing and differs in casting etc)
They are the best engine ford ever produced imo.

What they said Dan, great engines. The pre cross flow (as in my boat on Sat) can also be made to sing a bit if you want it too. We shall see what mine does on Sunday!!

I've been and got the engine today, looks ok and even the bore with the damaged piston in seems to be good although I'll probably still swap it out for a 1600 block.
I wander if anyone could I.D. the gearbox for me though? The only mark I can find on it is a stamp by the dip stick which reads "54JR 62" so thought I'd see if anyone can shed some light on it.

Depends what you want it for. It s a reduction gearbox (possibly around 2:1) so not ideal for a speedboat, it would normally be in a displacement boat. Not sure what make it is though.

It's destined for the hydro I'm building so probably don't need the reduction then, presumably that's the pear shaped part at the front? Is there any chance this could be removed and used direct to you think?
I'm quite keen to put a f-n-r box in if I can for a bit more control.
