Re: Interesting Mercury 35SS
Somewhere I have some info on these - although it may be little more than a sales brochure.
Mercs are like women, no 2 are exactly alike. That's what testing is about. In general it is safer to test motors and props than women!

I think in 67 the SS stood for solid state ignition, then in 1970's it was on some racing engines 25SS and 35SS with a quicksilver lower unit.

Re: Interesting Mercury 35SS
I believe it meant something else on the racing motors - but I don't know what. You are correct in that the 'fishing' motors were marketed as SS motors around that period - my '68 650 is an SS. It has a flash on the front of the cowl not unlike a certain Mr Hitler's SS emblem. Mind you Carl Kiekhaefer was of German decent . . .

Re: Interesting Mercury 35SS
Me too..and a bit of Jewish.
Those mid to late 60s SS 6's have odd igitions and wiring, with expensive bits. Beginning to think they should be avoided...
The standard 35 up to '65 was at 30 cu.in motor with the revised version like my old '67 at 32.5 cu.in which this looks like and the 400 twin is 33cu in I think...so it'd push it over a 30 cu.in class, or had they stopped that rating by then? In the same breath the 300 is rated at 39.6 cu.in, so no wonder they talk of it being closer to 40hp.

Re: Interesting Mercury 35SS
Here you go, from the 1976 racing catalogue. Sorry the quality is rubbish & it doesn't state the hp, but it does look like they got it revving to 6600 rpm if I am reading it correctly. If so then that extra 1000 rpm will have produced a few more neddys.
Also in the catalogue would have been the 650XS, 850XS & 1500XS.

Re: Interesting Mercury 35SS
There was a special class for it, although it was relatively short lived.
The motor was unpopular due to the heavy gyroscopic flywheel and limited potential of the 2 cylinder powerhead. The hp is no different from the 35/40 hp fishing motor. Outside of safety features, nothing was done to it to make it a "race" motor
